The Ridge Record on Abortion

In 1994, Ridge tried to hide his radical support of abortion. He told voters that he would uphold Pennsylvania's Abortion Control Act. He said that he would not upset the status quo on abortion.

But once he was elected, he wasted no time in helping his pro-abortion supporters.

According to The Newsletter of Planned Parenthood of the Susquehanna Valley:

"After fourteen years of grassroots lobbying by family planning supporters, Pennsylvania has joined the rest of the nation in allocating state dollars towards preventive family planning services...Since 1981, Pennsylvania has been one of only a few states that did not invest funds in contraceptive health services. Governor Tom Ridge made good on his campaign pledge to support funding for comprehensive family planning services by including $2.03 million for 'women's medical services' in his first budget...(legislators) inserted language that could have prohibited medical providers like Planned Parenthood from responding to patients' requests for abortion information or referral...Governor Ridge removed the ...'gag rule' language before signing the final budget. Ridge noted that he was 'expressly withholding (his) approval of that language'."

The influx of dollars has continued unabated. This year Ridge increased the funding by $1 million.

But Tom Ridge gave Planned Parenthood more than just money - he gave them direct access to the low-income women they prey upon.

On January 20, 1998, the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare mailed Planned Parenthood's brochure to PA's Medical Assistance recipients. The mailing was questioned by members of the Pro-life Coalition of Chester County.

The initial response from Ridge's Department, signed by Legislative Liaison Jeannie Bilunas, claimed, "While the mailing envelope may bear some resemblance to those used for distribution from the Department, I can assure you that this is where the resemblance ends." She stated that the mailing list of the Dept. was not shared, and that no taxpayer dollars were used to print or distribute the Planned Parenthood brochure.

Yet obviously the brochure had been mailed, and the envelope bore the DPW meter numbers. So the pro-lifers kept asking questions.

And on April 10, 1998, DPW Deputy Secretary for Administration Jeffrey Logan finally admitted, in a letter to a state representative, that the Planned Parenthood brochure had been processed through the DPW mail room. So DPW employees had stuffed the envelopes, on taxpayer time, with the Planned Parenthood brochure - with labor costs of $1,269.69; and DPW had provided the postage and envelopes - at a cost to the taxpayer of $14,267.69. Mr. Logan claimed that Planned Parenthood would reimburse the state for those costs - costs whose existence DPW had originally denied.

The scandal continues, with the discovery that additional Planned Parenthood affiliates participated in the program. And the head of the PP chapter first uncovered told the Philadelphia area press that the mailing was approved by the Governor's office itself. Pennsylvania's Auditor General has now entered the picture, calling for a full investigation.

Tragically, Pennsylvania witnessed the opening of a new free-standing abortion clinic right beside Penn State University. It has been reported that over 200 children a month are dismembered there.

To open in Pennsylvania, an abortion clinic needs a written transfer agreement with a local hospital. The requirement is a part of the Abortion Control Act, which Ridge pledged to uphold. But his Department of Health waived that requirement when the hospital denied the clinic's request. Not only did that waiver allow the clinic to open, but according to interviews with then-director Eric Harrah, it enabled the clinic to open its doors of death earlier than anticipated.

Tom Ridge does not just tolerate the abortion industry - he actively supports it!
