Tom Ridge - The Abortion Governor
1994
Candidate Tom Ridge promises to uphold Pennsylvania's Abortion Control Act
and he
claims to be against public funding of abortion
1995
Governor Tom Ridge gives $2.03 million of state tax money
in direct subsidy to abortion
providers - money that Governor Casey refused to spend.
1997
Governor Ridge's Department of Health waives a requirement of
the Pennsylvania Abortion Control Act, allowing a new abortion clinic
to open in State College. Newspapers quoted the clinic's
director as saying the waiver allowed the clinic to open
early. Over 200 babies a month are reportedly dismembered
inside.
1998
Ridge's Department of Public Welfare mails Planned Parenthood
brochures to Medical Assistance recipients, on state time,
using state employees, postage and envelopes. Initially
denied by the Department, DPW Deputy Secretary
Jeffrey Logan admitted on April 10th that taxpayers picked up the
tab for $1,269.69 of labor costs, and $14,267.69 of postage
and envelopes for mailing Planned Parenthood's advertising material.
Tom Ridge has already announced that he is planning to run for
national office in 2000.
